A Life

Nate Stein 1920-2010

Thank you so much for all your beautiful words of comfort last week while my dad was in the hospital. My father passed away on Friday as the sun was going down with all of us around him, holding both of his hands and each other. It's difficult to accept the loss of someone you had so much time to love here in this world, here that we know. Grieving is a shapeless process.

...it is not news that we live in a world
Where beauty is unexplainable
And suddenly ruined
And has its own routines. We are often far
From home in a dark town, and our griefs
Are difficult to translate into a language
Understood by others.

we're so terribly sorry, deb. your dad's generation has seen so many incredible events in this world and he was surrounded by the people he loved most when he left it. even if he was 90, it's too soon. yes, grieving is a shapeless process and one with peaks and valleys. if we can help with yours, please let us know. we've had our own experiences with it. xo, cindy & scott

Very sorry to learn this. Know the special place your father occupied in your heart.

Sweetest Deb, all my love and thoughts are with you and your family. Your father must have been so comforted by having his loving family around him as he passed from one life into the next; if you can take any solace in knowing that his greatest gift to the world is raising such a talented, creative, articulate, loving daughter, than perhaps that will temper the pain when you come up for air. at some point there *will* be a time when you can get through the day and feel like a human again, and hopefully your love for him will inspire you to keep doing what you're doing but with even more passion and energy. we are all thinking of you and sending you our support and love.

xoxo.

Aw Deb... I'm so sorry to see this news. It's such a gift that you were able to be there at his time, to say good bye, to tell him and show him how much you love him.
If you need anything, just let me know.

Thinking of you and your family - remembering my own fathers death, many years ago now. Amidst all the sadness we must cherish the joy and wonder they brought to our lives.

I am sorry for your loss. Such sadness for you and your family. Here is a lovely poem that I came across after the loss of a friend. It is by W. H. Auden. It sums up the unconsolable pain one feels after a loss like this, but has a beauty in the words.

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
